THE LIGHT OF GOD
SERGEI V. RACHMANINOFF|
"I love the music of Russian-born composer Sergei Rachmaninoff. He was born in Semyonovo, Russia, on 1 April 1873, and died in Beverley Hills, Los Angeles, on
28 March 1943.
Rachmaninoff was not only a great composer, but a highly-acclaimed concert pianist and conductor in his day.
I love the power of his music - the tremendous beauty, the powerful emotion, and the Russian melancholy.
I am also a passionate fan of the dramatic landscape paintings of the leading 'Hudson River School' artists Frederick Church and Albert Bierstadt. Try gazing at one of their masterpieces while listening to Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony - truly sensational".
My favourite Rachmaninoff works include:
- Piano Concerto no. 1 in F Sharp minor
- Piano Concerto no. 2 in C minor
- Piano Concerto no. 3 in D minor
- Piano Concerto no. 4 in G minor
- Symphony no. 2 in E minor
- Preludes, opus 23
- Etudes Tableaux
- The Bells
- Cello Sonata
- Piano Sonata in D minor
- Piano Sonata in B flat minor
- The Isle of the Dead
- Symphonic Dances
The enormous stretch of Rachmaninoff's hands is recorded in
the Guinness Book of Records
